Drive down almost any street in East Oakland, West Oakland, or the flats and you'll see it: mattresses on the sidewalk, couches at the curb, appliances dumped in vacant lots. Option 1: Oakland's Free Bulky-Item Pickup Program
Oakland's best-kept secret is that every resident — single-family homes and apartment renters alike — gets a free bulky-item pickup through Oakland Recycles, a collaboration between the City of Oakland, California Waste Solutions, and Waste Management of Alameda County. It's paid for through your existing garbage service, so there's no additional charge and no income requirement.
How to schedule
Call 1-888-WM-BULKY to book either a curbside collection at your address or a drop-off appointment at the Davis Street Transfer Station in San Leandro. It's appointment-based, and slots do book out — especially at month-end, around the holidays, and during moving season — so plan a couple of weeks ahead if you can.
What it covers
Each appointment allows up to about 4 cubic yards of material, which is roughly the volume of a small pickup-truck bed overflowing. Curbside collections also allow some extra items that wouldn't normally go in your carts:
- Mattresses and box springs
- Large appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges)
- TVs, computer monitors, and other electronics
- Tires
- Carpet and rugs
The catches
There are three real limitations. First, you have to move the items to the curb yourself the night before your pickup — the crew won't come into a garage, backyard, or upstairs unit. Second, the ~4 cu yd cap doesn't stretch. A garage cleanout, an estate's worth of furniture, or a post-tenant unit will blow past it quickly. Third, this is not a same-day service. If you need it gone this week, you're likely out of luck with the free program.

Option 2: Self-Haul to the Davis Street Transfer Station
If you have a pickup truck, a trailer, or a friend who owes you a favor, you can drop material off yourself at the Davis Street Transfer Station in San Leandro. It's the same facility the city crews use, and it's appointment-based — call 1-888-WM-BULKY to schedule your drop-off window.
Self-hauling makes sense if you already own the vehicle, the load is small enough to fit safely, and you don't mind doing the labor twice (loading at home, unloading at the transfer station). Once you factor in gas, dump fees for non-covered material, and half a Saturday, most people find that hiring a crew for a partial load ends up costing about the same — without the round trip.
Option 3: Special Materials — Mattresses, Hazardous Waste, and E-Waste
A lot of what people call "junk" in Oakland is actually regulated material that has its own free or low-cost disposal path. Sending these items to the landfill (or worse, the curb) is both illegal and easily avoidable.

Household hazardous waste (HHW)
Paint, solvents, pesticides, propane tanks, motor oil, automotive fluids, and household batteries are never allowed at the curb — not in your carts, not on bulky-pickup day, not ever. The same goes for appliances that contain freon (refrigerators, freezers, window AC units).
