Why Appliances and Electronics Need Their Own Rules
Old appliances and electronics are two of the most commonly dumped items in Oakland — and two of the most tightly regulated. Refrigerators leak refrigerant, TVs contain lead and mercury, and even a pile of household batteries counts as hazardous waste under California law. None of this is meant to make disposal harder; it exists because the environmental cost of doing it wrong is real. The good news is Oakland residents have several free and low-cost paths for both, and the rules are straightforward once you know them.
Appliances with Freon: The One Rule You Can't Skip
Refrigerators, freezers, window and portable AC units, and dehumidifiers all contain refrigerant (commonly called freon). Under federal law, that refrigerant has to be recovered by an EPA Section 608–certified technician before the appliance is scrapped. Releasing it into the air is illegal, and most transfer stations and recyclers won't accept the unit at all until the refrigerant has been evacuated and the appliance is tagged as certified.
That's why you can't just drag a fridge to the curb, and it's why a lot of "free" removal offers on Craigslist quietly turn into illegal dumps in East Oakland a few days later. Handling it correctly requires either a licensed technician or a hauler who works with one.
Where Appliances Can Actually Go
Oakland's free bulky curbside pickup
Large appliances — washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges — are accepted in Oakland's free bulky-item pickup program. Call 1-888-WM-BULKY to schedule. Refrigerators and other freon units are also accepted through the program, but the certified recovery step still applies on the back end. TVs, computer monitors, laptops, tablets, printers, and general consumer electronics can't go in your curbside cart in Oakland. California classifies most of them as hazardous e-waste because of the lead, mercury, and other materials inside. You have a few real options:

Batteries, Bulbs, and Other Hazardous Bits
Household batteries, fluorescent tubes, CFL bulbs, and small hazardous items don't belong in the trash or the recycling cart. Drop them at the Oakland Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2100 East 7th Street, or call 1-800-606-6606 for hours and accepted materials. Drop-off is free for Alameda County residents. When Paid Removal Is Worth It
Free options are great when you can wait, when the item is at ground level, and when you don't mind moving it yourself. A hauler is worth the fee when:
- You need it gone today or before a move-out deadline.
- The appliance is upstairs, in a basement, or through a tight door.
- It's a freon unit and you don't want to arrange a certified tech separately.
- You've got a mixed load — an old fridge, a dead TV, and a broken microwave — and want it handled in one stop.
