Why You Can't Just Toss a Mattress at the Curb
Old mattresses are one of the most-dumped items in Oakland, and it's easy to see why: they're huge, awkward, and don't fit in any normal trash cart. But leaving one at the curb with the regular trash isn't legal, and illegal dumping in Oakland carries real fines. The upside is that mattresses are roughly 90% recyclable — the steel springs, foam, cotton, and wood frame all get pulled apart and turned into new products. So the disposal path exists; you just have to use it.
Here are your three legitimate options, from free to paid.
Free Option 1: Bye Bye Mattress at Davis Street
Alameda County residents can drop off up to five mattresses or box springs per day, free of charge, at the Davis Street Transfer Station in San Leandro through the statewide Bye Bye Mattress program. There's no appointment needed for the mattress drop-off itself, and no residency paperwork beyond showing that you live in the county.
What's not accepted
The program is strict about condition because the recyclers can't process contaminated material. The following will be turned away:
- Mattresses that are wet, twisted, frozen, or spoiled
- Anything severely damaged or falling apart
- Anything infested with bed bugs
- Mattress pads and toppers
- Sleeping bags and pillows
- Car beds and crib mattresses
- Air mattresses
- Futons and sofa-bed mattresses
If your mattress falls into any of those categories, it can still be disposed of — you just need to use a hauler instead (see below).
Free Option 2: Oakland's Bulky Curbside Pickup
Don't have a way to get the mattress to San Leandro yourself? Oakland's free bulky-item pickup program accepts mattresses and box springs curbside. Call 1-888-WM-BULKY to schedule. It's appointment-based, you'll need to place the mattress at the curb the night before, and slots can be booked out a couple of weeks — so it works best when you're not in a rush. What Actually Happens to a Recycled Mattress
This is the part most people never hear. When your mattress goes through the Bye Bye Mattress program, it gets pulled apart into its component materials, and each one has a second life:
- Foam becomes carpet padding.
- Steel springs get melted down into rebar and new steel products.
- Cotton and other fibers turn into insulation and filters.
- Wood from the box spring frame gets ground into mulch.
That's a much better outcome than a mattress rotting in a vacant lot on 98th Avenue — which is where a lot of them end up.
Paid Option: Same-Day Mattress Removal
A hauler is worth it when you need the mattress gone today, when it's inside the house or upstairs, when it doesn't qualify for the free recycling program (wet, damaged, infested, or a futon/sofa-bed), or when you just don't want to wrestle a queen-size box spring down a staircase by yourself.
