Why the Garage Is Everyone's Least Favorite Room
The Oakland garage is where good intentions go to pile up. Old paint from the last kitchen refresh, a broken exercise bike, tires from a car you don't own anymore, a rolled-up rug, three boxes of "sort later" — and somewhere in there, allegedly, room for a car. - Pick a dry day. You're going to spread everything out on the driveway. Rain will ruin the plan.
- Empty the garage completely. Yes, completely. You can't decide what's worth keeping if you can't see it.
- Sort into five piles. Keep, donate, recycle, haul away, and hazardous. Don't add a sixth "I'll think about it" pile — that's how garages get packed in the first place.
- Clean the empty space. Sweep, hose down oil stains, wipe shelving.
- Put only the "keep" pile back, organized on shelves or hooks. Group by category so you can actually find things.
- Deal with the other four piles today. If they sit, they'll drift back into the garage.

Keep
Only items you've used in the last 12 months or expect to use in the next 12. Everything else is a candidate for one of the other piles.
Donate
Working tools, bikes, sports equipment, kids' gear, small appliances, furniture in usable shape — Oakland has plenty of local charities that accept these. If you're using a hauler, we donate usable items on your behalf.
Recycle

Broken furniture, warped particle board, that treadmill that's been a drying rack since 2019, ripped area rugs. If the volume is small and you can wait, Oakland's free bulky-item pickup takes most of it — schedule at 1-888-WM-BULKY (details in the Oakland bulky pickup guide). If it's a full truck or you want it gone today, hire a hauler.

Garage Items That Need Special Disposal
A surprising amount of what lives in a garage is legally hazardous household waste, which means it can't go in your trash, your recycling, or a junk hauler's truck:
- Paint, stains, solvents, thinners. Even mostly-empty cans.
- Pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals.
- Motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, brake fluid.
- Propane tanks.
- Batteries and fluorescent bulbs.
- Tires.
